MATTY'S MILKY BUNS ( VEGGIE HOT DOGS ABC PART 1)

Today is the last day of our holidays so it's time for one last blow out meal and what better way to
treat ourselves than creating one of our favourite meals form scratch. That's right, it's a hot dogs on buns day! Lets start with the buns. These buns are so simple to make - not quick as you have to proof of course but you can get them on the go first and prepare the rest of your meal whilst you wait. Just remember to smooth your buns or you'll end up like knobbly ones like I made to the right (Whoops!)

Hot Dog Rolls

250ml Semi Skimmed Milk
7g Dried Instant Yeast
400g Strong White Flour
1 Tbsp Golden Caster Sugar
1 Whole Egg

  1. First of all heat up your milk in a saucepan on a low heat so that it lukewarm. It should feel warm when you poke your little finger in it but not warm enough that it is steaming. Once warm enough, remove form the heat and tip in the yeast and give it a good mix before leaving to one side for 15 minutes.
  2. Mix together the flour and sugar in a large bowl and create a small well in the centre of the flour. Pour in the yeasty milk a third at a time, mixing everything together with a fork as yougo until dough starts to come together.
  3. Tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for around 15 minutes until the dough is smooth and elasticy. Roll the dough into a tight ball, place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp tea towel and place in a dry/room temperature environment for 1 hour.
  4. After one hour the dough should of doubled in size. Line a baking tray with baking paper and grease lightly. Knock the air out of the dough and divide into six equal sized bun shapedpieces and place on the tray 2cm apart. Make sure you smooth the top of the buns out unless you want knobbly ones like mine! Cover again and leave for another hour to let the buns double in size.
  5. Whilst the buns proof again, turn up your oven to 180 degrees (160 fan) and crack your egg into a little bowl and beat.
  6. Once your buns have risen, brush the tops with the eggs and then place in the oven to bake for 15 minutes and golden brown on top.
You can also test if your buns are baked if you lift one up and tap the bottom. The buns should sound hollow. If this is the case then remove and leave on a wire rack to cool.

The buns will be super fresh and so much more tastier than shop bought. Prepare the sauce, sausage and some fried onions and you have a fantastic hot dog which will clear away those holiday blues in a jiffy.

Hot Diggity Dog!
